ABOUT
Meet John Shepherd, Founder of ‘Shepherd Shearer’, based in Crookwell, NSW AUSTRALIA.
This business concept originated in the late 1980s. During that period, I was working on my family’s farm, breeding sheep and growing wool. Unfortunately, a decision by the Federal Government led to the collapse of the wool industry, causing significant distress. Since then, I have been determined to find ways to revive the wool industry (even if in only little ways) so that those involved can earn a livelihood from this valuable resource.
Over the years, there have been minor improvements in wool harvesting techniques, but no substantial advancements—until now. The shearing of sheep can now be performed more efficiently and safely. The invention, developed over six years, allows shearers to use the ‘Shepherd Shearer’ handpiece by purchasing it off the shelf and immediately using it in the shearing shed. This handpiece requires less power and employs a safer cutting method, producing wool that meets consumer demands.
To rejuvenate the Australian wool industry, this innovative handpiece is just the first of five planned stages. With the advent of robotic shearing in the future, we will also process wool on farms, creating jobs in rural and regional Australia while reducing pollution associated with cleaning raw wool. Or more importantly, enhancing comradery increase number of people working together, stopping to have smoko, lunch and travelling together. Rebuilding human connection.
The aim to restore manufacturing within Australia and invite international experts in wool processing to work in rural & regional Australia to accelerate the growth of this industry.
The primary concern is that the wool industry may decline if current trends continue. However, through hard work, discipline, innovative thinking and great clothing, the wool industry can secure a robust future, providing ongoing benefits to wool growers, consumers and everyone else in-between.
